Venice, the double in the photography of Monique Jacot: the exhibition at Palazzetto Bru Zane

With Photo Elysée, Fondation Bru in Venice is hosting The Figure and its Doubles, an exhibition by Swiss photographer and photojournalist Monique Jacot, who has long worked on the theme of the double.

As part of its program to support Photography, Fondation Bru in Venice is hosting, with Photo Elysée, The Figure and its Doubles, an exhibition by Swiss photographer Monique Jacot (Neuchâtel, 1934). Through a selection of shots, in the setting of the Palazzetto Bru Zane in Venice during the Venice Biennale, Fondation Bru continues its commitment to the enhancement of cultural heritage, and invites visitors to discover the talent of photographer Monique Jacot, one of Switzerland’s leading photographers. After studying at theÉcole des arts et métiers in Vevey, she embarked on a career in journalism as a photojournalist and has produced numerous reportages for Swiss and international magazines such as Camera, Die Woche, Du, Elle, Geo, Schweizer Illustrierte, Stern and Vogue.

Throughout her career, Monique Jacot has explored different photographic genres. Passionate about travel, she is known for her photographs taken around the world and for her meticulous documentation of certain aspects of Swiss life, particularly those relating to the condition of women. In addition to her reportages, Monique Jacot has produced a number of works that attest to her artistic research. In recognition of her important contribution to the visual arts, she was awarded the Grand Prix Suisse du design in 2020.

The photographs presented in this exhibition aim to reveal the way Monique plays with the figure and its doubles; through montage and various mirror effects, she gives her work a poetic, almost dreamlike aesthetic. In her work as a photojournalist, Monique Jacot juxtaposes different figures, which can reveal a social commentary at the center of her images. Moreover, since the beginning of her career, Monique Jacot has been particularly interested in women. She made a trilogy in which she photographed girls in the Czech Republic, France, and England. She later devoted herself to investigating the living and working conditions of women in Switzerland, creating three series that have been published: Femmes de la terre (1989), Printemps de Femmes (1994) and Cadences. L’usine au féminin (1999). This exhibition, organized by Photo Elysée, features modern prints taken from the original photographs held in the museum’s collections, unless otherwise noted.
