It opened on March 26 and will be open to the public until October 29, 2022 at the Scrutiny Room of the Doge’s Palace in Venice, Italy, the exhibition Anselm Kiefer. These writings, when burned, will finally give some light (Andrea Emo), curated by Gabriella Belli and Janne Sirén. Tied to celebrations of the 1,600th anniversary of the founding of Venice, the installation is at the center of the fifth edition of MUVE Contemporaneo, a biennial exhibition of the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia that aims to reflect on the relationship of current art to museums. The title refers to the writings of Venetian philosopher Andrea Emo.
The Fondazione Musei Civici had invited Kiefer in 2019, and the choice to host one of his works inside the Doge’s Palace was intended to measure the ability of this place-symbol of the Serenissima Republic-to still be a center of living culture and not just memory. Anselm Kiefer created this cycle of paintings specifically for the Doge’s Palace during 2020 and 2021: his works are in close confrontation with the thirty-three monumental canvases on the ceiling and with the heroic valence of the entire decorative cycle of the Palace, underlining the role of contemporary art in reflecting on universal themes.
These paintings arise from negation, from the erasure of others to which they are superimposed, are in a sense the outcome of the fire that burned the entire decoration of the hall in 1577. Kiefer ideally compared himself with the great painters of the past, such as Tintoretto, Palma il Giovane, and Andrea Vicentino, who were called upon by the Senate of the Republic to repaint on the walls of the Sala dello Scrutinio the glory of Venice after the devastating fire of 1577.
the exhibition is supported by Gagosian, with the collaboration of the Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio for the Municipality of Venice and the Lagoon.
