The name of the curator of the next edition of the Venice Biennale, number 58 of the importantcontemporary art event, which will be held in 2019, from May 11 to November 24 with vernissages on May 8, 9 and 10, 2019, was released today: it is Ralph Rugoff (New York, 1957), since 2006 director of the Hayward Gallery in London, one of the most important in the United Kingdom. Rugoff, who has curated numerous exhibitions of contemporary art, was also, from 2000 to 2006, director of the Wattis Institute, the art gallery of the California College of Arts, and in 2015 he curated the 13th edition of the Lyon Biennale. An acclaimed art critic, he has written for newspapers such as the Financial Times, Los Angeles Times, and Los Angeles Weekly, as well as art magazines such as Flash Art, Artforum, Artpresse, Frieze, Parkett, and Grand Street. His publications include monographs on Mark Wallinger, George Condo and Anya Gallacio, as well as publications such as Circus Americanus (1995), a collection of essays on contemporary American culture. In 2005 he won the first Ordway Prize for best curator of contemporary art.
“The appointment of Ralph Rugoff,” commented Paolo Baratta, president of the Biennale Foundation, “confirms the Biennale’s intention to qualify the Exhibition as a place of encounter between the visitor, art and artists. An Exhibition that engages individual visitors in a direct confrontation with the works in which the memory, the unexpected, the possible provocation, the new and different can solicit the gaze, the mind and the emotion of the observer, giving him the opportunity for an intense and direct experience.”
