From Oct. 31, 2019, to April 13, 2020, the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche in Urbino will present to the public 147 examples of Italian Renaissance majolica from the world’s largest private collection of its kind, on the occasion of the exhibition Raphael ware. The Colors of the Renaissance.
A collection of the highest quality that will be on view in the celebrated Urbino museum in conjunction with the major exhibition at the Palazzo Ducale in Urbino from October 3, 2019 to January 19, 2020, entitled Raphael and the Friends of Urbino.
Through the 147 majolica pieces, the Raphael ware exhibition, curated by Timothy Wilson and Claudio Paolinelli, aims to highlight how the Italian Renaissance era influenced every artistic form, including precisely majolica, which fully expresses the aesthetic quest and cultural climate of Italy between the 15th and 16th centuries.
Since the seventeenth century, sixteenth-century Italian majolica has been highly sought after by collectors, and historiated majolica has been associated with the name Raphael: in English Raphael ware, which is also the title chosen for the exhibition.
The city of Urbino was known for its historiated majolica ware; following the Renaissance taste for figurative decoration, between the late 15th and early 16th centuries, majolica painters covered their wares with all kinds of histories, original inventions of the ceramists themselves or inspired by engravings and woodcuts.
Among the greatest Italian majolica artists who were trained by Raphael’s genius were Nicola da Urbino, Francesco Xanto Avelli, and Francesco Durantino.
The majolica on display are exquisite and extraordinary pieces that have retained their original colors.
