Unpublished works, notebooks, drawings and projects by Enrico Prampolini on display in Rome

The Gallery of Modern Art in Rome is exhibiting little-known or previously unpublished works, drawings, graphic and documentary materials from the various donations of Enrico Prampolini's heirs to the Capitoline Superintendency.

Through January 14, 2024, the Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Rome is hosting the exhibition Laboratorio Prampolini #2. Notebooks, drawings and unpublished projects from Futurism to the Art Club, curated by Alessandra Cappella, Claudio Crescentini, Flavia Pesci, Federica Pirani, Gloria Raimondi and Daniela Vasta.

The exhibition is conceived as an exclusive project through which it is intended to bring attention back to the artistic multilingualism and interdisciplinarity of Enrico Prampolini, in the period between the 1930s and the 1950s, thus in the years when the artist reached the peak of his career.

Visitors can see little-known or totally unpublished works, drawings, graphic and documentary materials from the various donations of Prampolini’s heirs to the Capitoline Superintendency. Donations that began in 1992 and continued until 2020 and of which, the initial nucleus, has already been partly presented to the public in the exhibition entitled Laboratorio Prampolini in 2016.

After a period of study and in-depth study of the newly acquired materials and in continuation with the first exhibition of part of the donation, it was intended to return to reinforce the sense of the laboratory and interdisciplinary character of Prampolini’s art. Between painting, set design, architecture, applied arts and graphics, not forgetting the preparations of the great diregime exhibitions, publishing, up to theoretical reflection, promotion and cultural organization, including critical activity and teaching.

In the foreground is the presence and comparison of numerous of his preparatory works with paintings, artistic and architectural and theatrical projects, in an unpublished itinerary, just as unpublished are some of the drawings in the exhibition, architectural projects and sketchbooks (1930s-1950s) containing graphic elaborations, sketches and rapid compositions that well exemplify the artist’s great design work. A remarkable graphic corpus that in recent years has been revised and deepened to be placed in the exhibition also through the creation of graphic paths and iconographic parallels with the pictorial works of Prampolini himself, from the CRDAV Center for Research and Documentation of Visual Arts of Sovrintendenza, the Gallery ofModern Art and from other important public art collections (GAM Turin, National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, MART, Roberto Casamonti Collection in Florence, Museo del Novecento in Florence, Pinacoteca Palazzo Ricci in Macerata, etc.) and private.

For people with visual impairments, a dedicated tour is being planned, equipped with relief drawings and related audio descriptions. Free tactile tours, guided by specialized operators, are also available.

Hours: Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
