From August 31 to September 21, 2024, the Imperia Castle Gallery will host Ugo Nespolo's solo exhibition "What if it were a pop wind?" About fifty unique works by the artist will be on display, accompanied by a section dedicated to graphics.

From Aug. 31 to Sept. 21, 2024, the Imperia Castle Gallery will host Ugo Nespolo’s solo exhibition E se fosse un vento pop? by Ugo Nespolo, curated by Federica Porro and Marco Bravo, and produced with Studio Nespolo and Arte Pentagono, under the patronage of the City of Imperia and the collaboration of the Imperia Museum Network. About fifty unique works by Nespolo will be on display, accompanied by a section devoted to graphics, guiding visitors through the artist’s poetics. There will be several thematic sections: sails, museums, numbers, cities and presences, each of which will give the opportunity to explore various aspects of his work and broaden the view of the reality that surrounds us.

Through the selection of works, the aim is to pay tribute to Nespolo’s career, offering visitors a journey through his artistic universe. Accompanying the exhibition, a bilingual (Italian and English) catalog will be available that will include two previously unpublished critical texts on the artist and in-depth essays on the main themes explored. Not only the Gallery but also the entire city of Imperia will be involved, offering an in-depth overview of the work of one of the greatest contemporary artists.

Born in 1941, Ugo Nespolo is a multifaceted and revolutionary artist, known for his playful and ironic approach to contemporary art. Trained at the Accademia Albertina in Turin, Nespolo has experimented with different artistic languages, from experimental cinema to sculpture, painting and design. His career, which began in the 1960s, is studded with collaborations, exhibitions and awards that have established him as one of the most influential and dynamic figures in contemporary art.

“This event represents an important milestone in the growth path of the gallery, which for the first time, after four years of activity, opens its doors to an exhibition with such a prestigious name,” say Federica Porro and Marco Bravo, owners of the Castle Gallery. “With the valuable contribution of local associations and realities, it has been possible to outline a rich program of side events, from a charity auction to a creative tailoring workshop, from a literary reading to an art therapy meeting, from a theatrical performance to a manouche jazz concert, which will help make the gallery a place for sharing and cultural aggregation.”

The exhibition will be held in conjunction with the Vele d’Epoca event, whose official poster for the 25th edition is actually signed by Nespolo.

“The City of Imperia is pleased to host Maestro Ugo Nespolo’s solo exhibition at the Castle Gallery,” said Culture Councillor Marcella Roggero. “This event represents further evidence of the cultural growth of our city, the result of the constant commitment that, together with Mayor Claudio Scajola and the entire Administration, we have dedicated to the enhancement of those initiatives carried out with the passion and talent of local realities. Maestro Nespolo’s signature on this year’s Vele d’Epoca poster also seals a symbolic link between the sea and art, celebrating Imperia’s unique peculiarities and strengthening its cultural identity.”

Thanks to the collaboration with the Museum Network, formed by Municipia SpA and Cooperativa Solidarietà e Lavoro, a work by the artist will be exhibited in each of the city’s three museums: the M.A.C.I-Villa Faravelli, the Naval Museum and Villa Grock, with the intention of drawing an ideal itinerary that explores the city’s most representative and prestigious sites. For the managers, this is an opportunity to expand the cultural offerings with an important artist from the national and international cultural scene.

“The synergy between the Castle Gallery and the Municipality of Imperia, for us as a Network is really important and comes after a year of work, in which we have been working to create relationships with the territory and raise awareness of the heritage entrusted to us, aware of the importance and beauty of the city’s museums and their collections,” said Valentina Dionisi, production manager for Cooperativa Solidarietà e Lavoro scs. “Master Nespolo’s works, contextualized and in dialogue with the Museums’ collections, will create a kind of imaginary interweaving that we are sure will intrigue viewers, involving them emotionally.”

The exhibition, with free admission, will be open daily except Mondays, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. to 11 p.m., from Saturday, Aug. 31 to Saturday, Sept. 21 inclusive. Nespolo’s works exhibited in Imperia’s museums will be on view during regular opening hours. On the occasion of Vele d’Epoca, the Naval Museum will also be open exceptionally on Thursday, Sept. 12, from 5 to 10 p.m.
