Uffizi launches virtual exhibition on passions and desires in classical art

It is titled "Rebirth" the virtual exhibition on the passions and desires of human beings in classical art presented by the Uffizi.

On the official website of the Uffizi Gallery it is possible to visit the virtual exhibition Renaissance. An Itinerary of Emotions and Feelings through Ancient Statuary, whose main theme is the fundamental passions and desires of human beings through classical art.

It is precisely feelings, relationships and passions that have inspired art in ancient times, and humans have tried to express these feelings through depictions as diverse as painting, sculpture, music and theater.

From Venus and Love (c. 130-150 B.C., pictured) to the Nymph (1st - 2nd century A.D.), the exhibition features a gallery of photographs starring various sculptural works that speak of feelings such as joy, fear, anger and sadness and human conditions such as love, friendship and brotherhood.

As Director Eike Schmidt points out, “rediscovering and understanding the extraordinary heritage of classical art in the Uffizi Galleries can be done in many ways. The one we have chosen for this hypervision stems from a desire to actualize the message of these millennia-old marbles. Recovering their primary message means, in fact, sharing with these sculptures eternal values that make them feel like our companions in daily life.”

“Rediscovering a long period in which our affections have been so severely tested, it is perhaps inspiring to find the same feelings embodied, in a spontaneous and engaging way, in sculptures created thousands of years ago,” argues curator Lorenza Carmin, on the other hand.
