Uffizi and Boboli Gardens celebrate Fritz Koenig with largest monographic exhibition dedicated to him

The largest monographic exhibition dedicated to Fritz Koenig will be mounted at the Uffizi Gallery and the Boboli Gardens in Florence.

Fritz Koenig (Würzburg,1924 - Landshut,2017), the creator of"The Sphere" in New York’s Twin Towers, is celebrated from June 21 to October 7, 2018 with the largest monographic exhibition dedicated to him.
The exhibition is staged in Florence, in the halls of the Uffizi Gallery and the Boboli Gardens.

A considerable number of works, including sculptures and drawings, will be on display, including works from the last forty years of his life.
The materials of his monumental works, such as bronze, stone, and corten, fit well into the green spaces of the Boboli Gardens, creating an interweaving between their forms and the plants, trees, and lawns of the famous garden.

Known to the public is the large sphere made by the German artist that had been placed between the two Twin Towers: it was the only work of art that survived the September 11 attack; it had been damaged, but not destroyed, thanks to two large steel plates that plummeted and protected it. Koenig restored it and the work is still there at Ground Zero.

Uffizi Gallery Director Eike Schmidt said, “It is a particularly fortunate occasion that the first Fritz Koenig retrospective is taking place in Florence of all places. Not only is it the first such initiative dedicated to him since the one in 1974 held to celebrate his fiftieth birthday at the Haus der Kunst Munich, but it is also the largest solo exhibition ever devoted to a sculptor in Florence, even more comprehensive than the one dedicated in 1972 to Henry Moore, which has now entered the history of museology and exhibitions.”

"Fritz Koenig 1924-2017. The Retrospective" is curated by Alexander Rudigier, Eike D.Schmidt and Stefanje Weinmayr and is organized in collaboration with Skulpturenmuseum im Hofberg. Stiftung Koenig, Stadt Landshut.
