Two paintings by Giovanni Gasparro depicting Napoleonic-era popes on display in Rome

Rome kicks off the exhibition Giovanni Gasparro. Napoleon's Popes, which displays two paintings by the Bari painter depicting the two popes of the Napoleonic era.

From today, March 22, until May 6, 2018, the Napoleonic Museum in Rome is hosting the exhibition “Giovanni Gasparro. Napoleon’s Popes,” which will display the two paintings by the Bari artist, born in 1983, depicting the reigning pontiffs in the Napoleonic era Pius VI Braschi and Pius VII Chiaramonti.
The exhibition will also include the display of Gasparro’s sketches, thanks to which it will be possible to understand the artist’s creative process, and a selected nucleus of graphic works generally kept in storage, through which different aspects and moments of the pontificates of Pius VI and Pius VII, both characterized by long periods of exile, will be illustrated.

In an ideal dialogue with Giovanni Gasparro’s paintings, watercolors, drawings, and engravings will be exhibited, made by several significant artists who lived in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, in particular thegoldsmith Paolo Spagna, author of a drawing depicting the coat of arms of Pope Braschi, Giuseppe Valadier, whose design for a triumphal arch will be presented, and Jean-Baptiste Wicar, represented in the exhibition by a refined preparatory drawing for a large painting now in the papal residence at Castel Gandolfo.

Sponsored by Roma Capitale, Assessorato alla Crescita culturale - Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali, the exhibition is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (ticket office closes half an hour before) with free admission. Closed Monday, May 1.
