Two never-before-seen portraits of Augustus found in Rome and Isernia on display at the Mercati di Traiano

The Mercati di Traiano in Rome is exhibiting from June 29 to November 26, 2023 the two previously unseen portrait heads of Emperor Augustus recently discovered in Rome and Isernia.

On display from June 29 to Nov. 26, 2023 the Markets of Trajan in Rome are the two unpublished portrait-heads of Emperor Augustus recently discovered during archaeological investigations conducted in Rome, in the area of the Forum of Trajan, and in Isernia, during the restoration work on a section of the city walls along the Via Occidentale. Two portraits representing Augustus at two moments in his life: in his youth the portrait of Rome and in his full maturity that of Isernia.

The exhibition, entitled Imago Augusti. Two new portraits of Augustus from Rome and Isernia, curated by Claudio Parisi Presicce, Beatrice Pinna Caboni, Dora Catalano and Maria Diletta Colombo, promoted by Roma Capitale, Assessorato alla Cultura, Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali, and the Ministry of Culture, Soprintendenza ABAP Molise and organized by Zètheme Progetto Cultura, presents the contexts of discovery, which are extraordinary both for their urban location and for the way in which they were reused, of the two valuable marble works, significant of the importance and diffusion of official portraits of Augustus in Rome and in the peripheral areas of the Italic peninsula.

The exhibition is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. (last admission one hour before closing).
