In Turin, the Talucchi Rotunda at theAlbertina Academy of Fine Arts hosts, from October 21, 2021 to January 9, 2022, the exhibition Piero Simondo. Laboratory Situation Experiment, promoted by the Simondo Archive and curated by Luca Bochicchio. This is the first in-depth monographic and retrospective look at the work of Piero Simondo (Cosio di Arroscia, 1928 - Turin, 2020), one of the founders of theSituationist International and particularly attached to the city of Turin, where the artist passed away on November 6, 2020, and where his archive is still based.
Born in Cosio di Arroscia (Imperia) in 1928, Piero Simondo attended the Accademia Albertina in Turin from 1949 (at the same time as the Faculty of Chemistry) and worked tirelessly as an artist and theorist, creating artistic cooperative groups such as CIRA and the Experimental Laboratories at the University of Turin. The exhibition offers for the first time a wide-ranging look at the artist’s extensive experimental production, from the earliest productions of the 1950s to the latest of the 2000s.
After the preview in Alba, at the Church of San Domenico (until December 12), the Turin exhibition constitutes the second stage of an anthological retrospective on the artist that will be articulated between Piedmont and Liguria, the region where Simondo was born in 1928, and that in addition to the Accademia Albertina will see in 2021 a collateral event at Casa Ramello, in San Maurizio Canavese (curated by La Bottega delle Nuove Forme). In 2022 the journey of this anthological exhibition will continue at the MuDA Casa Museo Jorn in Albissola Marina (May 2022), with two spin-offs: at the Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea (with works by Simondo as part of the exhibition Espressioni. Epilogue, January 2022) and in Cosio di Arroscia (IM), with an event in the Spazio Piero Simondo (summer 2022).
Complementing the exhibition will be a book (co-published Gli Ori-Albertina Press, with contributions from Compagnia di San Paolo, Fondazione CRC and Fondazione De Mari) in Italian and English, with the dual function of documenting the exhibition and proposing a reflection on the figure of the artist, thanks to contributions from authoritative scholars in art criticism and history, philosophy and visual studies: Luca Avanzini, Paul Bernard, Luca Bochicchio, Franco Brunetta, Flaminio Gualdoni, Karen Kurcynski, Lisa Parola, Sandro Ricaldone, Maria Teresa Roberto, Marco Senaldi, Sara Tongiani.
The exhibition is open Thursday and Friday from 2 to 6 p.m. (last entry at 5:30 p.m.), Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (last entry at 5:30 p.m.). Tickets: full 5 euros, reduced 3 euros, free with Abbonamento Musei Torino Piemonte and with Torino + Piemonte Card.
