Turin pays homage to Vittorio Corcos. On display are his most famous paintings, from Dreams to Portrait of his wife Emma

The Accorsi - Ometto Museum of Decorative Arts in Turin pays tribute to Vittorico Corcos with the exhibition L'avventura dello sguardo.

From October 3, 2019 to February 16, 2020, the Accorsi - Ometto Museum of Decorative Arts in Turin pays homage to one of the most significant painters of the 19th century, Vittorio Corcos (Livorno, 1859 - Florence, 1933), with an exhibition.

Vittorio Corcos. L’avventura dello sguardo, this is the title of the exhibition, is curated by Carlo Sisi and through a selection of works by the artist six chapters of his artistic production will be retraced.

It will start with the section Glances, where a series of female portraits will introduce visitors to Corcos’poetic universe. He knew how to capture not only the physiognomies of his models, but also the most intimate and mysterious feelings, depicting a wide range of female types and their sentimental inclinations.

We will continue with Posing in the Studio: the protagonists of this section are the personalities contemporary with him who frequented the artist’s studio. Thus not only the ladies portrayed with attention to detail, but also friends, including Jack La Bolina, pseudonym of Augusto Vecchi, a naval officer known as a writer of novels and short stories, and the painter Francesco Gioli, who had his studio in the same building as Corcos.

Air of Paris includes paintings that are explicitly French, such as Jeune femme se promenant au Bois de Boulogne, Institutrices at the Champs Elysees, and a portrait of Jack La Bolina’s Daughter.

This will be followed by the section devoted to the Salon of the "Gentle Unknown," which will take visitors to the circle of Emma Rotigliano, Corcos’ wife, an assiduous correspondent of Giovanni Pascoli. Alongside Emma’s portrait are frequent visitors to the Corcos’ home: Giosuè Carducci, Silvestro Lega, Pietro Mascagni.

The protagonist of Luce mediterranea is the Leghorn coast: this is the background of the painting In lettura sul mare.

The last section, Eterno femminino, illustrates the theme of women: among her most famous paintings is Sogni (Dreams ), which perfectly embodies the ineffable beauty of the women loved and described by D’Annunzio and Fogazzaro. The splendid work sums up the anxieties of an age aware of its own crisis. Also on display is a rich selection of engravings dedicated to the deadly virgins. A keen observer of the fashion of the time, Corcos dwells on textiles, embroidery, and jewelry, as seen in Corinna Salmon or Maria Josè Princess of Piedmont.
