Steve McCurry. Reading, the exhibition that Palazzo Madama in Turin is hosting from March 2 to July 1, 2019, is a tribute to the readers that the great U.S. photographer Steve McCurry (Darby, Pennsylvania, 1950) has portrayed in every corner of the world in more than four decades of his career.
Curated by Biba Giacchetti and, for literary contributions, by Roberto Cotroneo, a journalist and writer, the exhibition presents 65 photographs portraying people from all over the world, absorbed in the intimate and universal act of reading: people captured by McCurry’s lens, which reveals the power inherent in this action, its ability to transport one into imagined worlds, into memories, into the present, past and future, and into the human mind.
The contexts are the most varied: places of prayer in Turkey, market streets in Italy, from the sounds ofIndia to the silences ofEast Asia, fromAfghanistan to Cuba, fromAfrica to the United States. Vibrant and intense images, documenting quiet moments during which people immerse themselves in books, newspapers, magazines. Young or old, rich or poor, religious or secular: for anyone and anywhere there is a moment for reading.
The photographs pay homage to the written word and are accompanied by a series of literary excerpts chosen by Roberto Cotroneo: in a sort of parallel path, a counterpoint of words dedicated to reading flanks McCurry’s shots, involving the visitor in an intimate and direct relationship with reading and with the images. The exhibition is complemented by the Leggere McCurry section, dedicated to books published since 1985 with Steve McCurry’s photos, many of them translated into various languages: 15 of them are on display, some of them now unobtainable, along with the most recent ones, including the volume published by Mondadori that inspired the creation of this exhibition. All the books are accompanied by the photos used for the covers, which are often the icons that made him famous throughout the world.
The exhibition is produced by Civita Exhibitions and Museums.
