The National Cinema Museum in Turin pays tribute to James Cameron with The Art of James Cameron, a major exhibition dedicated to one of the most influential directors, screenwriters and producers in film history. A journey through six decades of creativity that will take visitors on a discovery of the artistic process behind such masterpieces as The Terminator, Aliens, Titanic and the Avatar saga.
Set up in the vertical structure of the Mole Antonelliana, the exhibition features an extraordinary selection of rare works and never-before-seen materials from Cameron’s personal archive. The exhibition, conceived as a kind of autobiography through art, offers an unprecedented immersion into the world of one of the greatest innovators of contemporary cinema.
The exhibition layout is divided into six thematic areas, each exploring a key aspect of Cameron’s poetics and research: Daydreaming: the genesis of his stories and the construction of visual imagery; The Human Machine: the relationship between technology and the body, central to films such as The Terminator; Exploring the Unknown: the fascination with space and the ocean depths, recurring elements in his works; Titanic: Journey Through Time: the behind-the-scenes look at the blockbuster that marked film history; Creatures and Untamed Worlds: the concluding section.
More than 300 original pieces including drawings, paintings, models, costumes and props showcase Cameron’s tireless visual and technological research. Audiences can admire sketches and storyboards made by the director, photographs of iconic sets, 3D technologies developed or adapted for his productions, and experience immersive multimedia installations.
Conceived by the Cinémathèque française in collaboration with the Avatar Alliance Foundation, the exhibition is curated by Kim Butts with the participation of Matthieu Orléan and adapted for Turin by Carlo Chatrian, director of the National Cinema Museum.
