A new exhibition dedicated to Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (Albi, 1864 - Saint-André-du-Bois, 1901) runs from April 10 to September 29, 2019 in the halls of Villa Reale in Monza. Entitled Toulouse-Lautrec. La Ville Lumière, the exhibition hosts 150 works from theHerakleidon Museum in Athens (thus returning to Italy after the 2017 exhibition in Verona) to celebrate the artistic career of one of the greatest exponents of the Belle Époque.
The exhibition tells the story of late 19th-century Paris: bohemian life, the artists of Montmartre, the Moulin Rouge, theaters, humorous magazines, and prostitutes. This is the world of Toulouse-Lautrec, a genius who became best known for his advertising posters and portraits of characters that marked an era by remaining well imprinted in the collective imagination. Posters, lithographs, drawings, illustrations, watercolors, along with videos, photographs and furnishings of the period aim to reconstruct a cross-section of bohemian Paris, taking visitors back in time.
Among the most famous works in the exhibition are color lithographs (such as Jane Avril, 1893), advertising posters (such as The Passenger in Cabin 54, 1895, and Aristide Bruant in the suocabaret, 1893), pencil and pen drawings, promotional graphics, and illustrations for newspapers (as in La Revue blanche, 1895) that became emblematic of an era.
Curated by Stefano Zuffi and under the patronage of the City of Monza, the exhibition Toulouse-Lautrec. La Ville Lumière is produced and organized by Arthemisia with Nuova Villa Reale di Monza, in collaboration with the Herakleidon Museum in Athens.
