On Tuesday, April 16, 2024, Tommaso Calabro inaugurated the new gallery venue in Venice on the piano nobile of Palazzo Donà Brusa in Campo San Polo, whose origins date back to the early 14th century, celebrating the connection between Harold Stevenson (1929-2018) and the lagoon city, which was an important source of inspiration for the American artist.
Harold Stevenson, the first monographic exhibition in Italy, opens in conjunction with the pre-opening of the 60th International Art Exhibition, Biennale Arte di Venezia. In fact, it was in Venice, specifically in the sestiere of San Polo, that Harold Stevenson exhibited a series of important paintings in 1962, alongside artists such as Yves Klein and Jean Tinguely, at the Piccola Biennale exhibition, commissioned by the French galleristIris Clert and in parallel with the 31st Venice Art Biennale. And again in 1964 at the Biennale Flottante, again a project of Iris Clert.
Harold Stevenson represents a unique opportunity to discover the work of this artist, an exponent of postwar avant-garde culture, a close friend of Andy Warhol, and known for painting male nudes on a large scale, such as the most famous The New Adam (1962).His last Italian exhibition Realisti Iperrealisti at Rome ’s La Medusa gallery was in November 1973, where the artist exhibited two canvases titled Piece of Action alongside works by Botero, Hockney, Pistoletto and eight other important 20th-century artists.
On view in Venice until July 27 are works made between the late 1950s and the 1970s, including the famous nude paintings, “toreros,” and some of the glass sculptures created with Gino Cenedese in 1968 in Murano.
With Harold Stevenson Tommaso Calabro further deepens his research on Alexander Iolas, among the most famous gallery owners of the last century, who between 1972 and 1984 organized eleven solo shows of the artist in America and Europe: in New York in 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1982 and 1984, in Athens in 1973 and in Paris in 1973 and 1974.
