From May 11 to August 20, 2019, in the Sala terrena of the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, seven works created by Spanish artist Jorge R. Pombo (Barcelona, 1973) will be placed side by side with Tintoretto ’s masterpieces.
A sort of revisitation of seven masterpieces by the Venetian Renaissance master dedicated to the earthly life of the Virgin Mary: Annunciation, Flight into Egypt, Massacre of the Innocents, Mary in Meditation, Mary of Egypt, Crucifixion, Assumption.
A universal homage to femininity, to woman as mother, creature and creator, which finds its archetype in the figure of the Madonna.
The paintings, displayed on the occasion of the Tintoretto - Pombo, Maternity and Passion exhibition, will create a remarkable visual and emotional impact between Renaissance painting and contemporary interpretation, thus emphasizing the timeless power of Tintoretto’s works.
Jorge R. Pombo’s project is the only one dedicated to Tintoretto in Italy in 2019.
“I chose Mary, as the protagonist, as a tribute to femininity and as the main person damaged by the suffering generated during the Passion, unfortunately so many times relegated to the background. And I could not find all these meanings except in Tintoretto’s paintings. It also seems to me an excellent historical moment to affirm the importance of the female figure and the mother,” said the artist.
Pombo’s variations take life and meaning from the duality of the past and the present, but at the same time intend to emphasize the regeneration of painting through the negation of the past, history perpetuating itself in the present, the redemption of contemporary creative imagery over tradition. A sequence of figurative pairs is created for a general reflection on the family and the condition of the female world.
The artist uses an original painting technique: she reproduces by emptying the figuration with nuanced actions of erasure, to recover in a plastic way the spots, the color backgrounds. He faithfully reproduces the original works, shading them later with special solvents, poured on the canvas in a horizontal position, recalling the technique of Americanaction painting. A technique that gives the work a striking optical effect.
The exhibition Tintoretto - Pombo, Maternity and Passion is curated by Sandro Orlandi Stagl with Frederick Ilchman in collaboration with Gabriella Belli.
