On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of Tintoretto’s birth, Lecco’s Palazzo delle Paure welcomes a great masterpiece by the Venetian artist: it isDoge Grimani’s Annunciation, a painting depicting the Annunciation to the Virgin by the archangel Gabriel in a sumptuous and elegant setting. The work belonged around 1750 to Doge Pietro Grimani, and in that collection it was engraved by Pietro Monaco in 1763: the inscription at the bottom already indicated its attribution to Tintoretto.
Roberto Longhi judged it to be an early work by the artist and it has always been considered autograph. As for the dating, it is thought to have been made between 1582 and 1587, when Tintoretto executed another version of the same theme, namely theAnnunciation in the Scuola Grande di San Rocco.
The Tintoretto exhibition revealed is curated by Giovanni Valagussa and was organized by the San Nicolò Parish of Lecco/Pastoral Community Madonna del Rosario as part of the Il Mistero nell’Arte initiative, this year in its first edition, but intended to become a regular event.
“The extraordinary exhibition of a work of art on the occasion of Christmas takes on a special importance that helps us remember the devotional sense for which these masterpieces were created, before landing in the collections and museums where we look at them today,” says the curator.
“An opportunity to tell the whole city, its territory and all those who come to Lecco, attracted by this unique masterpiece, about the extraordinary present in the Christian celebration of Christmas,” says Don Davide Milani, provost of Lecco.
The exhibition can be visited from Dec. 6, 2019 to Feb. 2, 2020.
