The2020 edition of the World Press Photo exhibition was scheduled to start last April 25 before the health emergency changed plans. Now, the exhibition will take place in Rome from June 16 to August 2 in the spaces of the Palazzo delle Esposizioni.
The names of the winners of the 2020 edition were announced last April 16 through social networks; the pandemic did not make possible the customary award ceremony held every year in Amsterdam that inaugurates the World Press Photo Festival. For this 63rd edition, the jury of international experts reviewed the work of 4,282 photographers from 125 countries for a total of 73,996 images. A total of 44 photographers, from 24 countries, made it to the finals.
Yasuyoshi Chiba emerged as the winner of the photo of the year with Straight Voice. The shot depicts a young man, illuminated by the cell phones of his companions, reciting poetry during a protest rally demanding a democratic government for Sudan, during a blackout in Khartoum, June 19, 2019. Explained jury chair Lekgetho Makola: “Especially in a time when there is a lot of violence and a lot of conflict, an image that can inspire people is important. And here we see this young man who is not shooting, not throwing stones, but reciting a poem. It expresses a deep sense of hope.” Winning the World Press Photo Story of the Year award was Romain Laurendeau with Kho, The Genesis of Revolt. Kho, in colloquial North African Arabic, means brother. The reportage recounts the deep discomfort of Algerian youth who, in defiance of the authorities, urged the rest of the population to join in their action, resulting in Algeria’s largest protest movement in decades. Six Italians were also among the finalists:Fabio Bucciarelli, Luca Locatelli, Alessio Mamo (ranked second in the “General News, single photo” category), Nicolò Filippo Rosso, Lorenzo Tugnoli and Daniele Volpe.
Also on display for the first time will be a selection of the iconic photos that won the Photo of the Year award from 1955 to the present.
In addition to the photos, a section dedicated to Digital Storytelling will also be presented for the second year, with a series of videos recounting the crucial events of our time.
The World Press Photo 2020 exhibition is confirmed as the event that demonstrates and restores to the world the enormous documentary and narrative capacity of images, revealing their fundamental role as historical witness of our time.
This year the exhibition, in order to facilitate greater public enjoyment, will last two weeks longer than the canonical 30 days of past editions.
