In 2019 the Vatican Museums will mount an exhibition dedicated to Andy Warhol. This initiative will celebrate the thirty-nine years that have passed since the historic meeting, in Rome, between the pop art genius and Pope John Paul II.
The Vatican Museums are finalizing negotiations with theAndy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh; in fact, after the Rome debut, the exhibition will be staged in the institution named after the artist, which just next year will celebrate the 25th anniversary of its opening.
Of course, the Vatican Museums will exhibit the artist’s most religious works (he came from a family of immigrants from Slovakia who were active members of the Slovak Byzantine Catholic Church), such as the paintings from theLast Supper series (1986), inspired by Leonardo ’s Milanese fresco in Santa Maria delle Grazie, which will be displayed in the exhibition spaces of the Braccio di Carlo Magno along with other canvases with a spiritual theme.
"It is very, very important for us to have a dialogue with contemporary art, we live in a world of images and the Church has to be part of this reality," says Vatican Museums director Barbara Jatta at the microphones of The Art Newspaper “We are very interested in exploring the spiritual side of the artist.”
