The universe of Giovanni Fattori on display in Forte dei Marmi.

From July 22 to November 20, 2022 in the exhibition spaces of Forte Leopoldo I in Forte dei Marmi is the exhibition L’universo di Fattori, organized by the Society of Fine Arts, under the patronage of the Municipality of Forte dei Marmi, in collaboration with Villa Bertelli.

The exhibition intends to be an opportunity to give the real dimension of an artist without limits, through a selected anthology of about fifty works that trace the production of Giovanni Fattori, not only the undisputed master of the Macchiaioli, but also the forerunner of 20th century modernity.

Along the seven thematic sections, visitors will be able to note the change in form and technique from the early macchia studies applied to the documentation of Italian war events to the masterful “portraits of the soul,” in which introspective sensibility is combined with marked Tuscan-style realism; from the landscape studies of the golden season of Castiglioncello substantiated by the authentic feeling of nature to the enchanted impressions in which light becomes a tool for shaping reality into powerful and iconic images, to the careful and not without nostalgia narrative of the transformations of the urban fabric of Florence.

Among the works on view are French Soldiers of ’59, Military Post at the Camp and the previously unpublished In marcia, which are joined by La Punta del Romito and La Punta del Romito with boats and fishermen. And Horses Grazing, where sky and sea merge on the horizon in an image of strong panic feeling.

Also on display will be a series of portraits of friends and relatives who, as direct witnesses to excerpts of the painter’s life, reveal the most intimate aspects and social stratum of his world.

On the occasion of the exhibition, a catalog edited by Claudia Fulgheri, Elisabetta Matteucci and Francesca Panconi will be published, which will contain a rich iconographic apparatus to document the figure of Fattori as a man and as an artist.

Tickets: Full 8 euros, reduced 6 euros for residents, over 65s and journalists. Free under 18 and for the disabled.
