The Uffizi presents an exhibition of self-portraits on paper by the great masters of the 16th and 17th centuries

Self-portraits on paper by great masters on display at the Uffizi, shown in rooms frescoed by Luigi Ademollo. From Feb. 6 to April 28, 2024, an opportunity to admire masterpieces rarely shown to the public.

During the period from Feb. 6 to April 28, 2024, visitors to the Uffizi Gallery will have the opportunity to admire self-portraits on paper by renowned artists of the 16th and 17th centuries, including Fra’ Bartolomeo, Pontormo, Luca Giordano, Hans Holbein, Rembrandt and other masters. The exhibition is a natural extension and complement to the Uffizi Gallery’s exhibition of pictorial self-portraits. It is a selection of 41 works on paper, curated by Luisa Berretti, Laura Donati and Donatella Fratini, but due to the inherent fragility of paper, these drawings are very rarely shown to the public. All the pieces exhibited in this area come from the Gabinetto dei Disegni e delle Stampe degli Uffizi, one of the most important collections of graphic art in the world in terms of artistic value and quantity of the works preserved. The Gabinetto dei Disegni e delle Stampe had its first collecting nucleus thanks to Cardinal Leopoldo de Medici in the 17th century, but some drawings had already been collected in the 16th century by Cosimo I, the first Grand Duke of Tuscany. The collection continues to grow through purchases and donations of ancient and modern works.

The next phase of the exhibition of self-portraits on paper in the Ademollo Rooms will feature artists from the 18th and 19th centuries beginning in early May. Among other things, these are the first exhibitions to be totally self-produced and set up in the Gallery directly by the staff of the Prints and Drawings Cabinet, as an expression of the curatorial and conservation work carried out daily by this historic Uffizi institution behind the scenes.

The complete collection of self-portraits will be illustrated in a catalog published by Giunti.
