The state, in the past two years, has acquired 151 works destined for public museums, spending nearly 4 million euros.

There are 151 works that the state has acquired in the past two years (for a total expenditure of nearly 4 million euros -- 3,891,900 to be exact) by allocating them to public museums. These are mainly paintings but also sculptures, drawings, photographs and porcelain. The purchases were made by the General Directorate of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape at the proposal of local superintendencies: the state exercised its right of first refusal in private purchases or acted by compulsory purchase in the case of works that risked export.

Among the works purchased were works by major artists: two paintings by Bernardo Strozzi (one destined for the Galleria di Palazzo Spinola in Genoa and one for the Galleria dell’Accademia in Venice), Pompeo Batoni ’s Portrait of Abbondio Rezzonico for the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Antica at Palazzo Barberini in Rome, a Marina by Gustave COurbet for the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Rome, anAllegoria del lavoro by Carlo Carrà for the Pinacoteca di Brera, and a painting by Carol Rama for the Galleria Sabauda in Turin.

“The state strengthens the acquisition of works of art,” said Minister of Cultural Heritage Dario Franceschini, “and returns them to citizens, enriching museum collections. A valuable protection action made possible by the resources allocated to acquisitions, which in the 2018 Budget Law were increased by an additional 4 million euros.”
