The exhibition "Treasures and Emperors. The Splendor of Roman Serbia," which will open to the public from March 11 to June 3 at the Meizlik Palace in Aquileia(Udine).
The exhibition will be an account of the more than six hundred-year history of theRoman empire, particularly its expansion to the East, its late antique golden age, and finally its twilight in an area that gave history between 16 and 18 emperors.
Sixty artifacts, loaned by the National Museum in Belgrade before its imminent reopening after eighteen years of restoration, will be on display.
The exhibition is organized by the Aquileia Foundation with the Belgrade Museum and the Archaeological Fine Arts and Landscape Superintendence of Friuli Venezia Giulia, in collaboration with the Friuli Venezia Giulia Museum Pole, the Municipality of Aquileia and theNational Association for Aquileia.
Debora Serracchiani, president of Friuli Venezia Giulia, explained, "The intent of this exhibition, in continuity with the exhibitions of the ’Wounded Archaeology’ cycle, is to pursue a renewed openness to contexts, such as that of present-day Serbia, which in antiquity were closely connected and still recognize in Aquileia one of the centers of irradiation of common instances. Due to its location and development, in the late empire especially, Aquileia was an important cultural beacon through which the influences of northernItaly spread to the Balkans through the Sava basin. It is almost ’natural’ that the exhibition should be welcomed in Aquileia. By regaining cultural centrality, today Friuli Venezia Giulia can boast of increased tourist attractiveness, to which events like this have also contributed."
The exhibition is accompanied by a catalog published by Gangemi Editore, edited by Ivana Popović and Monika Verzár, which contains cards and photographs of all the works.
