Tomorrow, Feb. 24, a major retrospective exhibition dedicated to André Kertész (Budapest 1894 - New York 1985), one of the greatest photographers of the 20th century, will open at the Palazzo Ducale in Genoa, specifically in the sottoporticato.
The exhibition, curated by Denis Curti, will feature more than 180 shots tracing the art of the Hungarian photographer. For him, photography has been for more than 50 years of his career a kind of visual diary, capable of revealing poetry in the simple everyday.
In Kertész’s images, one can find the magnificence of a significant era for the art world: the period at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, in which the historical Vanguards, photography and cinema were born.
The shots on display come from the Jeu De Paume in Paris, while fourteen rare publications come from an Italian private collection.
The exhibition will be divided into five sections that will chronologically narrate the photographer’s artistic activity: starting with rural landscapes, with dreamlike atmospheres, to his geometric shots, the Parisian, then American years. By 1970 his creations were being exhibited almost continuously in the world’s largest cities such as Stockholm, London, Paris, Tokyo, Melbourne, and Buenos Aires, enjoying great success.
The last section is dedicated to some color shots never before seen by the Italian public.
The retrospective is organized by the Jeu de Paume in Paris, in collaboration with the Mediathèque de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine, Ministère de la Culture et de la Communication - France, with diChroma photography and with the participation of Palazzo Ducale Fondazione per la Cultura.
