The Museo di Roma in Trastevere is hosting, from November 1, 2019 to February 23, 2020, the exhibition Roman Notebooks. Views of Diego Angeli - Visions of Simona Filippini.
The series of 76 small oil paintings on paper, cardboard and wood, executed between 1885 and 1936, constitute a highly interesting corpus of the Museo di Roma in Trastevere’s collections.
They are the only known evidence of the pictorial production of Diego Angeli (Florence, 1869 - Rome, 1937) , a brilliant elzevirista, elegant and refined portraitist of the aristocratic circles of late 19th-century Rome. The precious nucleus of paintings, whose measurements do not exceed the size of a postcard, depict glimpses of Sabina, Florence and Paris, but most of these “delicate landscape impressions” have as their subject places in Rome and the Latium countryside, exemplary evidence of the intense fascination exerted on the writer by Roman monuments and landscape, destined to profoundly influence his journalistic and literary activity as well. The entire series of paintings will thus be exhibited, for the first time since their acquisition in the 1990s of the last century, in the rooms of the Museum and put in a confrontation outside chronological and linguistic schemes with the photographic images taken with a Polaroid camera by Simona Filippini, over the course of more than a decade, between Rome and its suburbs.
Filippini’s gaze on Rome portrays a space in constant transformation, almost elusive, like the flow of the Tiber River through the city, the same but always different.
