The lobby of the National Archaeological Museum in Naples has seen the opening of Il rumore del silenzio (The Sound of Silence), a photographic exhibition that aims to denounce violence against women and raise awareness of a tragically topical issue. On the occasion of the International Day Against Violence Against Women, twenty-six shots by nine Italian women photographers are presented in a symbolic path promoted by theFlegrea Photo Association and curated by FIAF/Italian Federation of Photographic Associations.
The chosen shots have a common thread, namely speaking in symbols, attributing to figures, objects and details, deprived of geographical contextualization, the task of representing the difficult condition of women in our present. There will be a mannequin installed in an unrecognizable narrow street, a colorful wig and dress abandoned on a bench, a half-open window facing a veiled urban scenery, portraits of nameless mothers raising their children alone, dolls and broken necklaces on a floor. Symbols that hint at a state of abandonment and silence.
Moreover, the faces of the women portrayed by Renata Busettini are intended to provoke outrage and condemnation in the viewer: Filomena was scarred with acid by her husband who did not agree to separate from her; Pinky was burned by her own man in front of her children’s eyes.
These are the names of the photographers involved in the project: Stefania Adami, Daniela Bazzani, Maria Grazia Beruffi, Renata Busettini, Tiziana Mastropasqua, Antonella Monzoni, Ilaria Sagaria, Irene Vitrano and Federica Zuccinini. The photo exhibition will be on view until Dec. 2, 2019.
On Friday, Nov. 29, at 5 p.m., a theatrical performance entitled Black Belly is scheduled, produced in collaboration with the Social Policy Commission of the Third Municipality of the City of Naples. The event, organized by theCatena Rossa Association in a network with MANN Educational Services and brought to the stage by the Hirondelle theater company, is a journey to the time of Nero that tells the stories and sufferings of the women who gravitated around the emperor: including Poppea, who was killed while expecting a baby.
