Hercules, the most famous hero of Greek mythology, will be the protagonist of a new exhibition to be held at the Reggia Venaria in Turin from September 13, 2018 to March 10, 2019. Entitled "Hercules and His Myth," the exhibition aims to illustrate the figure of Hercules with a collection of extraordinary paintings and art objects produced in classical antiquity and between the 16th and 18th centuries.
The exhibition coincides with the restoration work of the “Fountain of Hercules,” the centerpiece of the seventeenth-century design of the Gardens of the Reggia, dominated by the Statue of Hercules Colossus, whose re-presentation to the public represents one of the final stages of the great restoration of the Venaria. To conclude, the revival in recent decades of interest in the Hercules myth through the great films produced at Cinecittà in the 1960s and then again recently in Hollywood is presented.
The exhibition is organized by Swiss Lab for Culture Projects and Consorzio Residenze Reali Sabaude, in collaboration with AntikenMuseum Basel, MuseumsLandSchaft Hesse-Kassel and National Archaeological Museum Naples.
Curating the event is a curatorial-scientific committee composed of Friedrich-Wilhelm von Hase (chairman), Gabriele Barucca, Claudio Strinati, Laura Pasquini, Gerhard Schmidt, Rüdiger Splitter, and Paola Venturelli. The film section is directed by Angelo Bozzolini.
