Fondazione Berengo presents from September 5, 2020 to January 7, 2021 the exhibition Unbreakable: Women in glass, curated by Nadja Romain and Koen Vanmechelen. An exhibition that intends to reflect the value of women artists who have chosen glass as their medium of expression and will be staged inside the Fondazione Berengo Art Space in Murano. More than sixty women artists from Europe, the United States, Latin America, Iran and South Korea will be the protagonists.
"Unbreakable: Women in glass is a metaphor, a paradox and a symbol. A provocative proposal by Adriano Berengo to explore the relationship women have cin glass in the heart of Murano,“ said the curator. ”The time has come,“ added the curator, ”to resort to mythical icons, inspirational works of art signed by women, so that history can no longer be defrauded. The invisibility and transparency of glass shape a new generation that provides healing for the scars of history."
The exhibition features small and large masterpieces created in collaboration with Berengo Studio during its 30-year history, including Joana Vasconcelos’ chandeliers, Shirazeh Houshiary’s work Flicker, Cornelia Parker ’s stained glass and Fiona Banner’s scaffolding. The sculptures by Kiki Smith and Mona Hatoum exhibited at GLASSTRESS have found permanent locations in prestigious private collections, so they will not be shown in Murano.
Also on display are Enlightening Books by Chiara Dynys: a strongly visual installation consisting of 121 glass books in countless shades of white, only some of which are illuminated from within. A tribute to the importance of literature and a metaphor for archived knowledge.
Among the new exhibits are two new sculptures by Federica Marangoni, titled Work: Monument to the Female Job.
The avant-garde techniques used in the Studio’s casting workshop have made it possible to produce new works from a distance, initiating important collaborations with two icons of American art, Judy Chicago and Karen LaMonte.
After her success in the Austrian Pavilion at last year’s Venice Biennale, Renate Bertlmann created a new installation, transforming her famous glass roses with the addition of a touch of deep black. Artist Marya Kazoun is also presenting a new installation at the exhibition.
The exhibition also features new works by Charlotte Gyllenhammar, Enrica Borghi, Rosemarie Benedikt, Maria Grazia Rosin, Laure Prouvost, Lucy Orta, and Maria Thereza Alves.
