The Mart in Rovereto dedicates a major exhibition to Fortunato Depero with more than 500 works

The Mart in Rovereto celebrates its 20th anniversary by dedicating an exhibition to the artist who enabled its opening: the master of futurism Fortunato Depero. The exhibition, from Oct. 21, 2021 to Feb. 13, 2022, consists of more than 500 works.

From Oct. 21, 2021, to Feb. 13, 2022, the Mart in Rovereto will dedicate an exhibition to Rovereto’s greatest artist, namely Fortunato Depero (Fondo, 1892 - Rovereto, 1960), a master of futurism and an artist who unequivocally marked the history of the Mart: in fact, without Depero, the museum would not exist. Born in Trentino in 1892, upon his death in 1960, Depero left the only Italian Futurist museum and his personal archive to the City of Rovereto.

It is for this reason that almost two decades after its inauguration, the Rovereto museum is celebrating and recounting Depero’s priceless legacy, exploring his topical experimentation and research in the fields of art, fashion, design and comics from the 1970s to the present, in an exhibition curated by Nicoletta Boschiero, and entitled Depero new Depero.

Under the ceiling of the Mart, transformed into a vibrant “contemporary tapestry,” about 500 works will be on display, including artworks, drawings, furniture, posters, photographs, books and magazines; videos and films made in the last 20 years; comic books and design objects, as well as famous Campari products. The exhibition layout, curated by the Baldessari and Baldessari studio, intends to stage an ideal dialogue between Depero and the Mart by creating links between the museum spaces and Deperi’s works. Thus, in a play between negative/positive, the geometric volumes of the skylights designed by Mario Botta become “footprints” whose colors are taken from the pantones of some of Depero’s works. With this exhibition, the Mart reflects the plausible museographic vision of the artist. Depero, in fact, loved to “shuffle the cards” in search of a direct relationship with production and consumption, rebelling against the idea of art as an absolute value and anticipating the discovery of the commodity as an artistic and cultural product.
