The largest anthological exhibition ever dedicated to the Swedish duo Nathalie Djurberg & Hans Berg titled"A Journey through Mud and Confusion with Small Glimpses of Air" is being held at Mart in Rovereto until January 27, 2019.
A journey through dreamlike environments populated by quirky people, animals and plants that interpret the drives and contradictions of the human soul. Landscapes intended to be sharp allegories of contemporary society.
Visitors will find themselves"losing their way" among objects, sounds, images, music, and landscapes to go on an inner journey that will lead them to the deciphering of existence.
Artistic techniques are also amalgamated in the exhibition itinerary: sculpture, painting, drawing, and music combine with techniques of the present, such as stop-motion film, animation, sound art, and virtual reality, to create large installations and three-dimensional objects that are fun and irreverent.
On display are the most significant works between the early 2000s and 2018: from the earliest video animations, to The Potato and The Parade, two large installations from the Fondazione Prada, which in 2008 dedicated the first Italian retrospective to the Swedish duo.
The anthological exhibition concludes with It Will End in Stars (2018), a virtual set produced in collaboration with Acute Art: thanks to an optical visor and two controllers, visitors can immerse themselves in a fantastic environment, interacting with the work and partially modifying the narrative path (Enjoyment is possible from Tuesday to Friday between 2 and 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.).
Also featured are two new installations: Snake With a Mouth Sewn Shut, or, This is a Celebration and Delights of an Undirected Mind; two sculptural groups made in 2018, Cheer Up - Yes You Are Weak and Yes, Life is Hard and My Fixation With Making You Happy and Content; and a new site-specific work for the Mart, Am I Allowed to Step on This Nice Carpet?
The exhibition has already achieved great success at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm and will be hosted at the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt in the spring.
In the past decade, works by Nathalie Djurberg and Hans Berg have been exhibited at the Venice Biennale, the New Museum in New York and the 21st Century Minsheng Art Museum in Shanghai.
A Journey through Mud and Confusion with Small Glimpses of Air is curated by Lena Essling and Gianfranco Maraniello and is produced by Moderna Museet, in collaboration with Mart in Rovereto and Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt.
