The individual in photography since the 1970s: works by Ghirri, Berengo Gardin and other leading photographers in Parma

From April 13 to May 19, 2019, Valserena Abbey in Parma hosts the exhibition 'New Figures in an Interior'

The exhibition New Figures in an Interior as part of the 2019 edition of European Photography entitled Legami (Ties) opened on Saturday, April 13, 2019, in the Sala delle Colonne of theAbbey of Valserena (Parma), home of the CSAC Center for Studies and Archives of Communication of the University of Parma. Intimacies, relationships, new worlds. The exhibition, entirely constructed with works from the CSAC archives by authors such as Gianni Berengo Gardin, Carla Cerati, Giovanni Chiaramonte, Mario Cresci, Luciano D’Alessandro, Luigi Ghirri, Guido Guidi, Marzia Malli, Paola Mattioli, and Giovanna Nuvoletti, revolves around the transformation, which takes place during the 1970s, of the narrative of the intimate dimension of individuals, whose social identity is profoundly modified by the changes in vision that the ’revolutions’ of the previous decade brought with them.

Thus, the outcomes of militant reportage and the interest in particular themes impose themselves, even in photographic spheres not expressly characterized by the intentionality of denunciation: sexual liberation, gender struggles, the overturning of traditional patterns of the way of understanding the family and relationships, the questioning of social hierarchies and the consequent emergence, with leading roles, of new social groups. These are themes that clearly affect photographic and editorial production, that is, in spaces within which traditional elements (domestic interiors, moments of everyday life, objects of common use, pictures of family life and restricted communities) are combined in compositions governed by a profoundly transformed language, also by virtue of reflections that were being conducted in parallel in the artistic and photographic spheres at that time.

Through the work of numerous authors, therefore, some chapters of that particular season will be explored, in which personal and collective identity, including in relation to the intimate and affective dimension, is redrawn in the light of new consciousnesses, reached also thanks to the investigations of artists and photographers.

The exhibition will remain open until May 19.
