The iconography of the miraculous image of the Madonna della Ghiara at the Civic Museums of Reggio Emilia. With works from Guercino to Boulanger

From December 7, 2019 to March 8, 2020, the Reggio Emilia Civic Museums are offering the exhibition From Guercino to Boulanger. The Madonna of Reggio. Diffusion of a Miraculous Image.

The exhibition, curated by Angelo Mazza, aims to illustrate the rapid spread of the iconography of the Madonna della Ghiara in Italy at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries: thirteen works, ten of which are on display and three present only in the catalog, to present this iconography, whose diffusion is due to devotional needs of various social, cultural and geographical spheres.

The paintings on display document the establishment of that devotion in the territories of the Serenissima (Zeno Donise’s altarpiece in the Bergamasque region), in the duchy of Mantua (Francesco Borgani’s altarpiece in the church of Sant’Apollonia), in that of the Farnese (Giovanni Lanfranco’s altarpiece in Capodimonte, originally in Piacenza), and in the cities of the Papal States with works by Guercino, Passignano, and Jean Boulanger in Cento, Forli, and Pergola, respectively. The cult of the Madonna della Ghiara immediately conquered Ferrara and Modena, represented in the exhibition by altarpieces by Carlo Bononi, Scarsellino, and Ludovico Lana.

As expressions of personal pietas, the altarpiece by Zeno Donise from the parish church of Roncobello in Val Brembana, dating from the early 17th century, and the one for the church of San Pietro in Cento made in 1618 by the young Guercino stand out.
