In Mantua, Palazzo Te is hosting from February 1 to June 30, 2020, the Giulio Romano Experience, a multimedia event that aims to engage visitors by retracing the figure and career of Giulio Romano. And it was Giulio Romano, a great pupil of Raphael, who built the palace on the commission of Federico II Gonzaga, who summoned him to Mantua in 1524.
In the tour, Giulio’s life is told in stages through the innovative languages of multimedia: virtual reality viewers, augmented reality screens, high-definition projectors, and proximity audio will allow the viewer to enter the artist’s workshop and experience the atmosphere of one of Europe’s most renowned Renaissance courts, discovering the secrets of the architectural and pictorial work of the celebrated Master of Mannerism.
The story unfolds in three different narrative environments. The first is dedicated to Giulio Romano and wonder as purpose in art: an evocative narrative in images traces Giulio’s entire career, from his first trials in Raphael’s workshop to the architectural and painting masterpieces of the Mantuan period and the spread of his style throughout Italy and Europe. The next room focuses on Palazzo Te and the refined Renaissance narrative device enacted by the Master and his workshop. The third and final environment aims to enhance Mantua and the “signs” left by Giulio Romano.
The exhibition dialogues with the palace’s new multimedia route: thanks to a careful study of historical documentation and experience in the application of the latest technologies in the field of cultural heritage, the public can take advantage of a virtual reality station that allows them to embark on a journey with Giulio Romano through the history of the palace. In post-production, the collected images of all the spaces have been processed, divided by layer and through motion graphics: thus Giulio Romano’s drawings come to life and volume again.
Giulio Romano Experience is produced by Fondazione Palazzo Te in collaboration with Electa and designed and implemented by Punto Rec Studios and Visivalab.
