In the Ballroom of the Royal Palace in Genoa you can admire until March 25, 2018 the Royal Nativity: an exhibition of the first core (the first 27 pieces), just restored, of a nativity scene consisting of 85 carved and painted statues and with costumes made of silk, cotton, velvet, denim cloth, and silver trimmings.
Commissioned by the Savoy for the Turin church of San Filippo, it is attributed to Giovanni Battista Garaventa and can be dated to the early19th century.
The exhibition is curated by Serena Bertolucci, Alessandra Cabella and Luca Leoncini in collaboration with Giulio Sommariva and the students of the scenography and decoration courses of the Ligustica Academy of Fine Arts for the set design.
Upon completion of the restoration, the entire Nativity scene will be displayed in Christmas 2018.
In 2014 it was declared “of exceptional historical and artistic interest.”
The exhibition is included in the entrance fee to the Royal Palace Museum.
