At the Belvedere Museum in Vienna, the exhibition Stadt der Frauen. Künstlerinnen in Wien von 1900 bis 19 38(The City of Women. Artists in Vienna from 1900 to 1938).
The city of Vienna is thus dedicating a retrospective to women artists, such as Elena Luksch-Makowsky, Helene Funke or Erika Giovanna Klien, who contributed their works to Viennese modernism and the post-World War I art movements.
At that time, women who wanted to become artists were heavily penalized: they were denied access to training and artists’ associations. Despite these obstacles, some of them managed to realize their dream as artists, building careers in the art scene of the time.
The exhibition thus features works presented for the first time or partly rediscovered that made significant contributions to the art movements of theearly 20th century.
Among the names featured are Ilse Bernheimer, Friedl Dicker, Marie Egner, Louise Fraenkel-Hahn, Helene Funke, Greta Freist, Fanny Harlfinger-Zakucka, Hermione Heller Ostersetzer, Elisabeth Karlinsky, Erika Giovanna Klien, Frida Konstantin Lohwag, Leontine von Littrow, Elena Luksch-Makowsky, Mariette Lydis, Emilie Mediz Pelican, Teresa Feodorovna Ries, Mileva Roller, Frieda Salvendy, Anny Schröder Ehrenfest, Lilly Steiner, Helen Taussig, Ilse Twardowski Conrat, Olga Wisinger-Florian,Franziska Zach.
The review is curated by Sabine Fellner.
