[dip] contemporary art in Lugano presents the first solo exhibition of Peter Wüthrich(Bern, 1962) in Canton Ticino from March 13 to May 25, 2020.
Tales, this is the title of the exhibition, has as its central theme the book, an element that since the 1990s the artist has elected as his main expressive tool: in the course of his artistic production he has used the book to create metamorphoses both with whole books and with pages and covers of various kinds and formats. Wüthrich creates wall and floor works, diverting attention away from his primary function of books; in fact, the latter are to be observed as paintings and sculptures.
Recent works will be on display in the exhibition, where the book, covers, bookmarks, and page clippings are essential elements that, through imagination, contribute to creating a parallel world, not with words, but with abstract paintings, sculptures and installations: butterflies resting on pictures, covers with recognizable titles, women’s briefs, bed sheets.
Tales presents objects, installations and collages intended to reflect on the cycle of life, thanks to continuous literary references. At the center is the butterfly, an image of thehuman soul and a traditional symbol closely related to the life-death-resurrection cycle.
Wüthrich believes that a book is like a butterfly cocoon, and that the open pages of a book under the gaze of the amazed reader become butterfly wings. The gallery room will indeed be populated with butterflies.
The Swiss artist makes the butterflies by cutting out book covers with great precision; his in short are not vanitas or pop still lifes, although the themes of fragility and transience are inseparable from the image of butterflies, but his irony has to do with the fantastic. Everything in the exhibition is connected and related: the works seem to be born from one another as if from a single cocoon that contains and generates them.
