The art of Koen Vanmechelen takes the stage at the Architecture Theater in Mendrisio.

The Architecture Theater in Mendrisio, designed by architect Mario Botta, will host the exhibition Koen Vanmechelen - The worth of life - 1982/2019 from October 4, 2019 to February 2, 2020.

The exhibition, sponsored by the Architecture Theater Foundation, will extend to the exterior and three floors of the building, where more than sixty-five works by the artist, including sculptures, paintings, neon, prints, and installations, will be on display. The exhibition will present works created between 1982 and 2019 to trace Vanmechelen’s artistic journey, highlighting his neo-Baroque character.

Internationally renowned Belgian artist, sculptor, painter, performer, video artist, scholar, as well as human rights activist, Koen Vanmechelen (Sint-Truiden, 1965) has pivoted his work on the relationship between nature and culture, juxtaposing animal or plant hybridization projects with the contamination of figurative arts, materials and expressive tools. His art is an expression of an aesthetic of wonder and an ethic grounded in the value of life, from his first wooden sculptures in the 1980s, to the development of an extensive research program aimed at the generation of new poultry breeds, to the recent creation of a biodiversity park called Labiomista where, between architecture and landscape, installations, works and birds of the most diverse species coexist. The artist’s imagery revolves around the figure of the hen as a symbol of biocultural evolution.

For Vanmechelen, art is based on the re-invention of nature, and furthermore he turns to science, asking it to materialize the visions of his imagery.
