The 1960s in Genoa. An exhibition on the economic boom years at the Royal Palace

From April 14 to July 31, 2022 in Genoa, Palazzo Reale in the Falcone Theater is featuring 'Genova Sessanta': photographs, design objects, and art to trace the transformations of the economic boom years.

There are architectural drawings and art objects, those of design and advertising posters, paintings and photographs, in the exhibition Genoa Sixties. Visual Arts, Architecture and Society, which chronicles the transformations of the city, creativity and customs in the years of the economic boom.

Scheduled to run from April 14 to July 31, 2022, the exhibition will open at the Palazzo Reale in Genoa’s Falcone Theater. It is promoted by Palazzo Reale (Ministry of Culture), curated by Alessandra Guerrini and Luca Leoncini with Benedetto Besio, Luisa Chimenz, Leo Lecci and Elisabetta Papone. The aim is to recount the great transformations of Genoa in the 1960s, a decade of profound changes due to the burst of new ideas and renewed cultural stimuli, significant social changes, economic innovations and new languages that marked an acceleration in the productions of the visual arts.

It is a city in magmatic ferment that in the decade of the Great Italian Boom wants to leave behind the wounds of the war for good to give itself a European face and role, focusing on industrialization and services, fueled by new communication arteries and new neighborhoods designed to accommodate a workforce from the South. In a handful of years, old Genoa was transformed, attracting great professionals from outside but also galvanizing its own cultural resources to turn visions into reality. The energy of growth spurred creativity in all sectors, from art and design to music, culture and the economy. The exhibition offers a journey into the forge of existential energies and visions that was Genoa in the 1960s punctuated, throughout the exhibition, by shots of some of the Genoese photographers active in those years(Lisetta Carmi and Giorgio Bergami above all) with architectural drawings, design furniture, advertising graphics, industrial objects, paintings and sculptures by, among others, Lucio Fontana, Andy Warhol, Mimmo Rotella, Vico Magistretti, Gio Ponti, Franco Albini, Angelo Mangiarotti and Eugenio Carmi.

The setting up of the Teatro del Falcone (itself an emblematic place of that decade), aims to accompany the visitor along a chronological and thematic path, organized by sections intended as fragments of specific experiences exemplifying a certain process of development, through the fateful 1960s that inevitably also acted as a bridge connecting past and future.

The exhibition event will be accompanied by a scholarly catalog with essays and descriptions of the works on display, published by Silvana Editoriale, signed not only by the exhibition curators but also by other scholars.
