The 18th century on display at the Pitti Palace

Until April 15, 2018, Palazzo Pitti will exhibit a selection of works from the 18th century: starring Canaletto.

To celebrate the 250th anniversary of Canaletto’s death, the Pitti Palace in Florence has selected a number of works from the eighteenth-century collections, including paintings in storage and those in the rooms dedicated to foreigners.

Until April 15, 2018, therefore, works will be on display for the exhibition"The Eighteenth Century. A selection“ works that give visitors ”a taste of the truly European breath of the collection," according to Uffizi Galleries director Eike Schmidt.

Seventeen canvases on non-religious subjects, including the largest section of the exhibition devoted to Canaletto: two of his Venetian views with glimpses of Florence, Rome and Naples.

Plus: Turkish scenes such as the Sultana reading, an alleged image of Mary Adelaide of France taken by Liotard in Middle Eastern garb; Goya’s portrait of the Countess of Chinchón; two children by Chardin; and a family portrait by Crespi.

Alessandra Griffo, curator of the exhibition and curator of Eighteenth-Century Painting, Tapestries, Furniture and Carriages, explained that “these are nuclei of works susceptible to further aggregation, cues to reflect on the complexity of a varied century that saw opposites meet and clash, where even geographic boundaries became more blurred and international exchanges more dense.”
