From October 25 to December 10, 2018, an exhibition presenting ten works by Piero Dorazio to the public is coming to Tornabuoni Arte ’s Milan headquarters at 36/36 Fatebenefratelli Street. The exhibition is titled, precisely, 10 Masterpieces by Piero Dorazio. For this Milanese tribute to the Roman master, Roberto Casamonti, patron of Tornabuoni Arte, has personally chosen a number of canvases, starting with Nel cuore verde, a 1965 work that participated in the Venice Biennale the following year and that has been chosen here as the image of the exhibition and some beautiful reticles from the 1960s.
“For me,” Casamonti declares, "Dorazio was much more than a true protagonist of European abstract painting and an important intellectual who was able to help strengthen ties between our country, Europe and the United States. He has been a dear friend. Beyond any doubt, Dorazio played a key role in the art of his moment, a leading avant-gardist of European abstract painting. And at the same time, a writer, an art critic, a learned polemicist, a lecturer for a decade at the University of Pennsylvania, an experimenter in decorative arts and urban design, an organizer of events, a keen observer and shrewd commentator on contemporary artistic research. An artist and intellectual whose rich and multifaceted interests make him difficult to pigeonhole into rigid classifications today. Our first meeting took place in the 1980s, when my passion for contemporary art had just prompted me to take the plunge: from collector to gallery owner. In those years I had already frequented Lucio Fontana and Alberto Burri, just as in the following years I would do with many other protagonists of the Italian cultural scene, from Vedova to Rotella, or Ceroli and Arnaldo Pomodoro. Yet, more than thirty years later, I cannot forget that a special relationship, a sincere friendship, the bond of a lifetime, was born from that meeting, interrupted only in 2005, with his passing. Of our moments together I remember everything and thinking back to that friendship still moves me. Also because Piero was like an open book, he knew how to envelop you in a harmonious atmosphere, involving you in the many stories he loved to share. I listened and experienced each nuance of his stories, which, because of the complicity he knew how to imprint on them, also became mine."
