Taranto also celebrates Pier Paolo Pasolini, with an exhibition by five contemporary artists

In Taranto, the Contemporary Art Research Center of the non-profit Rocco Spani Foundation is dedicating an exhibition to Pier Paolo Pasolini, interpreted by the works of five contemporary artists, through Jan. 30, 2023.

CRAC Puglia, Centro di Ricerca Arte Contemporanea of Fondazione Rocco Spani onlus, based in Taranto, dedicates to Pier Paolo Pasolini, on the occasion of the centenary of his birth, the contemporary art exhibition Pier Paolo Pasolini: Present Time - Five Presences in Contemporary Art to reflect and further explore through the visual arts the work of the great intellectual, man of letters and filmmaker, “heretic and corsair,” who has profoundly marked, since the second half of the 20th century, the social, cultural and political landscape of our country. The exhibition is promoted by CRAC Puglia in collaboration with the associations “Archita Festival del Teatro Antico” and “Polisviluppo Servizi Archeologici” as part of the Taranto Grand Tour, sponsored by public institutions, national and territorial associations.

The exhibition project was inaugurated on December 28, 2022 in the project room of CRAC Puglia, in the ancient heart of the old city. The protagonists of the exhibition curated by Cecilia Pavone are five contemporary artists: Fernando De Filippi, Giulio De Mitri, Gianluca Murasecchi, Pippo Patruno and Lino Sivilli, who decline, through different languages and practices, the “complex” work of Pasolini in his syncretic dialogue between art, literature and cinema. Pasolini’s social and political message can be summed up, according to the curator, in his succinct phrase: “We are all in danger.” Words that are extremely relevant today. And this is also a thematic aspect of the exhibition.

Pasolini visited Puglia several times, establishing a deep bond with the city of Taranto. In 1951 he stopped in the city of the two seas on the occasion of his participation with the short story Terracina in the prestigious Taranto Prize, chaired by Giuseppe Ungaretti. In July 1959, however, he returned to Taranto, and during his stay on the Apulian coast he wrote for the magazine Success, a series of articles entitled The Long Road of Sand. Contained in this fruitful collection is one of his poetic reflections paying homage to the city of Taranto: “Taranto perfect city. To live there, is like living inside a shell, an open oyster. Here new Taranto, there, crowded, old Taranto, around the two seas and the waterfronts.”

The exhibition Pier Paolo Pasolini: Present Time - Five Presences in Contemporary Art will be open until Jan. 30, 2023, and during the exhibition period, in addition to guided tours, Experience Meetings will be held and educational workshops will be held for local schools. In addition, the significant retrospective exhibition of Master Wilfred Gaul will be open to visitors during the same period.
