At 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 20, 2018, the exhibition Superheroes at the Piaggio Museum in Pontedera, Pisa, opened, presenting to the public the work of cartoonist Giovanni Timpano, born in Calabria but Tuscan by adoptionadoption, who for some years now has been working successfully for the American comics market, lending his pencil to the creation of stories of some of the genre’s most famous characters, from Batman to The Shadow, from Lone Ranger to Doc Savage, from Green Hornet to The Avenger.
On display will be more than 50 plates and covers created by Timpano for major U.S. majors, starting with some 20 precious original drawings dedicated to the 2018 miniseries The Shadow/Batman, a work scripted for DC Comics by Steve Orlando that features the coexistence of the two beloved superheroes. There will be no shortage of a section dedicated to illustrating the process of creating the final plates, from the initial drafts to the stooping to the final coloring by the colorist.
The screening room will feature the documentary Non smettere di disegnare (2015) by Giacomo Becherini, an investigation of the artistic path leading to the creation of a drawing from the personal experience of professionals working in Tuscany such as Daniele Caluri, Alberto Pagliaro, Tuono Pettinato, Stefano Casini, Giovanni Timpano, Francesco Ripoli and Maddalena Carrai.
The exhibition of Timpano’s work is accompanied by the display of two artistic Vespas from the Piaggio Museum’s collection, hand-painted by artist Germana Triani for Luca Soldati ’s 6sensi Eventi and dedicated to the comic book theme: the Vespa 50 Special “Mickey Mouse” from 2013 (next to which stands the sculpture of Mickey Mouse Vespista, one of 26 statues donated by Disney Italia to the ABIO Italian Foundation for a charity auction aimed at creating child-friendly hospital spaces and purchased in November 2016 by Vespa for Children, a humanitarian initiative of the Piaggio Group) and the very recent Vespa 50 Special SuperHero (2018), illustrated with colorful drawings of America’s most beloved superheroes.
To complete, two sculptures by Bologna-based set designer Andrea Poggipollini, fantastical creatures created in collaboration with artist Adrian Tranquilli that bring together comic book characters and masterpieces of classical sculpture.
The exhibition, with free admission, will remain open until Jan. 31, 2019. To learn more you can call 058727171, email museo@museopiaggio.it or visit the Piaggio Museum’s official website.
