From March 2 to July 1, 2019 in the Medieval Court of Palazzo Madama, Turin, a photographic exhibition entirely dedicated to the universal passion for reading will be open to the public.
Steve McCurry. Reading, this is the title of the exhibition, will consist of a selection of shots taken by U.S. photographer Steve McCurry (Philadelphia, 1950) in more than forty years of his career: the shots depict the universal theme of reading, that is, people from all over the world, absorbed in the intimate and universal act of reading. Sixty-five photographs of people in places of prayer in Turkey, among market streets in Italy, in India and East Asia, in Afghanistan and Cuba, in Africa and the United States. Vibrant and intense images documenting quiet moments during which people immerse themselves in books, newspapers, and magazines. Young or old, rich or poor, religious or secular: for anyone and anywhere there is a moment to read.
The photographs that pay homage to the written word are accompanied by a series of literary excerpts chosen by Roberto Cotroneo, in a sort of parallel path. A counterpoint of words dedicated to reading that flank McCurry’s shots, involving the visitor in an intimate and direct relationship with the reading and the images.
The exhibition is curated by Biba Giacchetti and for literary contributions by Roberto Cotroneo, journalist and writer.
The exhibition is completed by the Leggere McCurry section, dedicated to books published since 1985 with Steve McCurry’s photos, many of them translated into various languages: there are fifteen of them, some of them now unobtainable.
