Another move for Steve McCurry - Icons, the celebrated exhibition showcasing 100 shots by American photographer Steve McCurry (Philadelphia, 1950) from his early days to the present.
From June 12, 2020 to January 10, 2021, the exhibition is on display in Cagliari at Palazzo di Città, curated by Biba Giacchetti promoted by the City of Cagliari, Culture and Entertainment Service and organized by Civita Mostre e Musei SpA in collaboration with Fondazione di Sardegna and SudEst57.
The exhibition presents, for the first time in Sardinia, about 100 shots that trace Steve McCurry’s vast production, to offer visitors a symbolic journey through the complex universe of experiences and emotions that characterizes his images. Starting with some shots, the only ones in black and white, taken between 1979 and 1980 in his first reportage in Afghanistan, where he had entered together with the mujaheddin fighting against the Soviet invasion. From Afghanistan also came Sharbat Gula, the girl McCurry photographed in 1984 in the Peshawar refugee camp in Pakistan and who became an absolute icon of world photography (pictured below).
From India to Burma, from Japan to Africa to Brazil: with his photos Steve McCurry brings the viewer into contact with the most distant ethnic groups and the most disparate social conditions, highlighting a human condition made up of universal feelings and looks whose pride affirms the same dignity. With his shots, the U.S.-based photographer allows people to cross borders and get up close to a world that is destined for great changes. In fact, the exhibition begins with an extraordinary series of portraits and develops between images of war and poetry, suffering and joy, awe and irony.
Also available at the Cagliari exhibition, free of charge to all visitors, is an audio guide in which Steve McCurry narrates in the first person many of the photos on display. In addition, an initial video projected in the exhibition accompanies the photos of the first reportage in Afghanistan; in a second video, McCurry recounts his long career and especially his understanding of photography. A final film, produced by National Geographic is dedicated to the long search that led Steve McCurry to find the “Afghan girl,” 17 years after the famous shot.
