From April 8 to September 4, 2022, Palazzo Albergati in Bologna presents the exhibition PHOTOS! in which more than seventy photographic works from the Julián Castilla collection will be on public view.
In fact, shots by great Spanish and international masters of photography, such as Alfred Stieglizt, Man Ray, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Vivian Maier, Robert Capa, André Kertèsz, Alberto Korda, Robert Doisneau, Carlos Saura, Ramón Masats, Oriol Maspons, Isabel Muñoz, Cristina García Rodero, and Chema Madoz, will be on display. Shots that are now part of the collective imagination of the last century and offer a journey through the history of twentieth-century photography.
The Julián Castilla collection is considered one of the most important private collections in Europe, belonging to Julián Castilla, a well-known Spanish art collector: the collection includes more than a century of photographic art, from the birth of modern photography at the beginning of the 20th century to the current 21st century. From the birth of the Magnum Agency and the development of photojournalism to the evolution of fashion photography, the telling of the present, and the contemporary challenges of the digital age.
Most of the photographs in the collection are in black and white. The last photograph, dating from February 2005, is by the couple Christo and Jeanne-Claude and depicts their monumental 37-kilometer installation in Central Park, consisting of a total of 7,503 “doors,” or orange fabric panels.
The exhibition is under the patronage of the Emilia Romagna Region and the Municipality of Bologna, is curated by Cristina Carrillo de Albornoz, and is produced in collaboration with the Villanueva de los Infantes Museum of Contemporary Art.
PHOTOS! is produced and organized by Arthemisia.
