From May 25 to July 6, 2024, Cardelli & Fontana Gallery in Sarzana presents Through the edges, a solo exhibition dedicated to Phillippa Peckham (Iserlohn, 1957), curated by Ilaria Mariotti. The exhibition features a body of works by the painter that originated from her walks around her home, in the countryside and from observing plants in their natural context or in the studio. For this cycle of works, Phillippa Peckham worked with woodcut and the mark made by inking a surface, covering it with paper and quickly drawing the subject by not resting her eyes on the paper. The final result only becomes apparent after printing.

The starting subjects are plants and their essential features of shape and structure. Prints and drawings are made on Japanese rice or hemp paper, and the artist articulates them by layering them on top of each other, side by side in a form of narrative that is meant to return not only the research on the subject, but to evoke the time and space traversed, suggestions and moods, encounters, words and greetings, happenings.

For Phillippa Peckham, walking is an essential activity, a meditative, cyclical and rhythmic practice that sustains her life, her research and her studio work. Walking responds to an inner need to explore a place, chart a course and measure the world and its boundaries through the movement of the body.

The artist is particularly interested in resilient plants, those that are renewed every year and become landmarks for recognizing places. During her walks, she notices particular vegetations that regenerate from year to year, enduring and renewing themselves, thus becoming distinctive elements of a landscape. These plants create happiness in renewing an appointment and building habits, allowing paths and boundaries to be reconstructed each time for something more intimate, intangible and personal.

The exhibition is open to the public Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 5 to 7:30 p.m. Opening on Saturday, May 25 at 6 p.m. (open Saturday, May 25 and Sunday, May 26 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 5-8 p.m.)
