From January 19, 2021 until June 13, 2021, the MAN Museo d’Arte Provincia di Nuoro presents a major anthological exhibition dedicated to Lisetta Carmi (Genoa, 1924), one of the most significant protagonists of Italian photography after World War II. The exhibition, curated by Luigi Fassi and Giovanni Battista Martini, is part of the research conducted by MAN on the relationship between the great Italian photographers and Sardinia, an aesthetic dialogue that sees in last year’s retrospective on the work of Guido Guidi its previous interlocutor.
The exhibition, entitled Lisetta Carmi. Cheerful Voices in the Dark. Photographs in Sardinia 1962-1976, aims to bring to light an unpublished chapter of Lisetta Carmi’s photography, the one dedicated to Sardinia, bringing together hundreds of black-and-white shots taken between 1962 and 1976 during numerous and repeated stays on the island. Completing the exhibition is an unpublished series of color slides depicting the landscapes of the Sardinian hinterland, with woods, rivers and lakes captured in their most arcane and evocative dimension. Two sections of the exhibition are then devoted to the series of I Travestiti (1965-1971) and the workers in the port of Genoa (1964). The first is the outcome of the years of frequentation dedicated by Lisetta Carmi to the community of transvestites in Genoa, relegated to the margins of society, sharing with empathy a daily life that contrasts social marginalization with moments of communal living. The second is the outcome of a 1964 photo report on workers in the port of the Ligurian capital, made with the aim of denouncing the extremely harsh working conditions.
The exhibition is accompanied by an extensive monographic catalog published by Marsilio and accompanied by critical essays by Etienne Bernard, Nicoletta Leonardi, Giovanni Battista Martini and Luigi Fassi. For all information you can visit the website of the MAN in Nuoro.
