The Sassari National Picture Gallery presents from July 21 to October 14, 2023 the exhibition Landscapes/Landscapes. Sardinia in Nineteenth- and Twentieth-Century Painting: an itinerary with one hundred and fifty works by seventy painters of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries that aims to tell through images one hundred and fifty years of nature, cities and villages of Sardinia.
A comparison between the past and the present with new insights into the protection of natural heritage and its relationship with energy transition and renewable energy.
On display are mostly unpublished works by major authors, such as watercolorist Gaston Vuillier, and, after nearly 100 years, canvases by Giovanni Marghinotti. The exhibition juxtaposes paintings from public collections with works held in private collections, including a small but valuable nucleus of drawings by Giuseppe Biasi. Urban views, particularly of Cagliari, are represented by several authors such as Francesca Devoto, Anton Ettore Maury and Felice Melis Marini, as well as watercolorist Stanis Dessy. The works of important artists such as Anselmo Bucci, Giuseppe Rivaroli and Uberto Bonetti will be on view, along with those of Sardinian painters featured in the exhibition with all the masters and many minor painters.
In addition to offering a wide-ranging review of the pictorial genre, the exhibition aims to provide food for thought and insight on issues of close relevance. Lectures on the urban realities of Sardinia in ancient times and the transformation of cities and their historic centers are scheduled.
