Open to the public from July 3 to Sept. 26, 2022, at the Piero della Francesca Civic Museum in Sansepolcro is the exhibition Raffaello Schiaminossi Engraver, dedicated to an illustrious Biturgensian, Raffaello Schiaminossi (Sansepolcro, 1572 - 1622), whose fourth centenary of death falls this year.
Thanks to the generous contribution of collector Luca Valbonetti and the scientific contribution of engraving expert as well as curator of the exhibition Luca Baroni, the project intends to remember an artist who, although famous in his lifetime, for too long remained known only to a small circle of scholars and collectors. With the exhibition itinerary, it is therefore intended to spread knowledge of Schiaminossi’s engraving production, represented here in an almost exhaustive way. The exhibition stems from the desire to celebrate the anniversary of the artist’s death, but above all to present insights and news about his life and works.
About 150 prints are on display at the Civic Museum in order to offer the public an almost complete panorama of the main subjects Schiaminossi treated: prophets, sibyls, as well as fencers, images of which accompany Ridolfo Capoferro’s famous treatise on the art and use of fencing.
The exhibition is accompanied by important manuscripts that refer to the author’s biography, on loan from theHistorical Archives of Florence, the Arezzo Library and theBishop’s Archive of Sansepolcro. Some works and documents owned by the municipality, kept in the Historical Archives of the municipal library, complete it.
Paintings by Schiaminossi can also be found at other sites in the city, such as the Cathedral, the Oratory of Our Lady of Grace, and the Church of San Francesco: visitors are therefore invited to learn about the artistic production for which Schiaminossi is less known.
The exhibition, which has obtained the patronage of the Minister of Culture, the Region of Tuscany, the Scuola Normale of Pisa and the Oliveriana of Pesaro, is packed with side events, including a study conference to be held near the exhibition’s closing day scheduled for Sept. 26, 2022.
